Buffalo +4 v. Texas Tech |

When Buffalo was slowed down enough to score in the mid-70's or lower, they are 4-1 SU this season, with the only loss to Northern Illinois 77-75. Granted, none of the teams that slowed the Bulls down to this level are in Texas Tech's category, yet, it does present context. However, when diving further into totals, in games where coach Nate Oats squad was listed at 147 or lower, they are 5-0 SU. There is no question that Texas Tech could play unbelievable defense and suck the life out of Buffalo. With the Bulls, it seems superior talent, not style is what would cause them to lose. We should all be aware of tourney trends, because like what we just saw in the 12 vs. 5 matchups, they continue to be true. In the second round, going into Saturday, the Top 3 seeds are 17-32-1 ATS in last 50 tries, and when they are a favorite of seven or fewer points, that number dips to 9-23-1 ATS. In addition, the gambling gods have not been kind to the 3-seeds, on a negative 3-10 ATS run in this round of action. Take Buffalo.

If you watched Murray State and Marquette's game closely, the Golden Eagles missed at least 10 shots within seven feet of the basket they had made at least 70 percent for the season covering 85 percent of their games. Less than half were contested, they just missed. It would seem the chances of that happening again in the Racers favor is limited. Florida State has been too good for too long versus stronger teams that Murray State. I love Morant, but No.4 seeds are 11-3 ATS in this round make it 12-3 against the spread.

St. Louis had a miracle win to take the A-10, but their brief hot streak ends here against solid Virginia Tech team that will not go long stretches without scoring. Another big factor is the Hokies average four more 3's a game and if that just alone plays to form and everything else is equal, that's a cover. Add in VT is 10-1 ATS as a neutral court favorite of 6.5 to 12 points, the Hokies are good.

San Diego, there is a good reason why they play twice as money Under's as compared to Over's (22-11). The Toreros are deliberate on offense and play good defense, especially when they are in their zone, which normally takes time off the clock they generate a lot of so-so shot attempts late in the shot clock. Though basketball coaches are mostly completely unaware of point spreads unless it can be used as a motivational tool, it's not lost in our line of work that San Diego is 12-3 Under after a game where they failed to cover the spread this season. Memphis also fits some trendy talk with a 13-4 Under mark at home having won three of their last four contests. Finish this off with the Tigers on a 6-0 Under run.

The Volunteers will have several advantages coming in the SEC championship. It starts with having play allowed Auburn to dictate the tempo a week ago Saturday, which should be very fresh on their minds. Tennessee's veteran team was also denied a title a year ago. For players like senior Admiral Schofield and juniors Grant Williams and Jordan Bone who could go pro, this would be a nice conclusion to their SEC careers. Coach Rick Barnes will hammer home the point about not allowing Auburn to control the pace. He will want Bone to run when necessary, set the half court to get the ball in the paint for inside shots and hopefully drawing fouls. Tennessee is 26-2 SU and 15-12-1 ATS as a favorite, winning by 15.6 PPG. Tennessee opened as a 4.5-point favorite and despite being upset last week, they are 10-4 ATS against the Tigers and the favored club is 18-6 ATS. We see the Vols winning by 8 and possibly snatching a No.1 seed.

Coach Mike White and his players know what this game means for Florida. The Gators are perched at the top of the NCAA bubble and while they have solid numbers in the alphabet rankings (NET and RPI), they are not a lock. A victory over LSU, no matter if they have institutional problems are not, is huge. If Florida bests the Tigers, they help themselves immensely. Freshman Nate Laszewski had caught fire, scoring 23 points in previous outing against Clemson and 14 yesterday in a half against the Jackets, before falling on his tailbone from about 5-feet off the ground and labored to even walk to the locker room and never returned. Louisville will likely look to pressure Notre Dame early since they only have five players left that contribute regularly and if they can wear the Irish down, who have issues scoring anyways, the Cardinals could turn this into an easy victory and conserve energy for Thursday. With Notre Dame 6-20 ATS after beating the spread and 3-8 ATS if their opponent wins more than 60% of their games, hard to imagine the 'Ville does not win by 12 to 18 points.

The Hokies are at their best when they are running, which forces opposing teams to scramble on defense and Virginia Tech players are well-schooled to drive to the tin to score or force the opposing team to collapse on the ball-handler and find the open shooter. This strategy has worked brilliantly against the Hurricanes which is why Williams squad shot 58.8% and 49.2% in the two meetings. Miami cannot play at this pace, which forces coach Jim Larranga to attempt to slow down the pace. The problem with that is the 'Canes are not a good half-court shooting team at just 43.6% and at 33.4% from deep. On the presumption Virginia Tech comes to play, they are 15-5 ATS against competitors with losing record, while the Hurricanes are 6-13 ATS vs. losing clubs. When I thought about this matchup last night I was thinking Northeastern as an underdog would possibly a nice play. I was surprised to see them as the favorite and will ride Hofstra instead. Hofstra is a slightly better offensive and shooting team and is 8-2 ATS when playing against a team with a winning record this season. Hofstra wins the Colonial.

Though I played and really like Greensboro, they came from behind to win their last two games from a significant deficit. Playing a third game in three days expending that much energy is draining. Plus, Wofford won both games by 30 and 29 points proving they are just a bad matchup for the underdog. Wofford by at least 10.

Toronto arrives in Vancouver with the second-most road points in the league at 20-9-3 and they have thrived against the Western Conference away from home with a 10-2 mark. It's been a lost season again for the Canucks, thanks to a pedestrian defense and a rotten offense. Vancouver is 17th stopping the puck and 27th in scoring, with a broken power play that is 29th. The Canucks have lost eight of 10 and in this stretch, they have scored two or fewer goals eight times, while hanging three zeros in the process. The Maple Leafs on the -180 ML is tempting, but what appears to be a better play is Toronto on the puck line. The visitor has played six straight times that produced a puck line outcome and with Vancouver not scoring, like the value of +130 giving -1.5.
