PLAY ON: Spurs -1

(#506) San Antonio Spurs | ATS | .

If you pay attention to my articles, you would have seen that I'm expecting the Oklahoma City Thunder to respond after falling short last year. I expect OKC to win the championship this season. That being said, this is a very tough opening game for the Thunder, playing the opponent that they struggled against a year ago, & on the road.

San Antonio is only getting better as well, with the young talent evolving into stars in this league. This should be an ultimate scrap in the opening game. However, I'm going with the home court advantage considering SAS has won four of the past five meetings here in Texas. Give me the Spurs here.

Burns' Prediction: 116-107 Spurs.

1* Free Pick on Middle Tennessee State/Florida International over 45 -110

This is a FREE PLAY on Montreal on the PUCKLINE option.

I think Montreal will not only win this favorable home matchup on Tuesday night, but it will do so by a sizeable margin.

The Habs have had two nights off since a 4-3 OT win here over the Sabres, while the Sharks lost 3-1 in Toronto last night (I had the Leafs).

Expect a rested home side to keep the foot on the gas from start to finish in what I feel is a great situational play; consider MONTREAL on the PUCKLINE.

Good luck, NP

FREE PLAY — SOUTH ALABAMA–MARSHALL UNDER 64.5 — 7:30 ET

One of Tuesday's strongest historical totals systems points toward a lower-scoring game in Huntington, West Virginia.

The system targets teams coming off exceptionally high-scoring performances, identifying situations in which recent offensive production can inflate expectations for the following game.

Historically, qualifying games have finished UNDER at an 86-40-1 rate (68.3% of decisions), producing +42.0 units and a 30.3% ROI when betting the UNDER.

South Alabama enters after consecutive offensive explosions, scoring 52 points against Louisiana-Monroe and 56 against Arkansas State.

The Jaguars possess an outstanding offensive line and three productive running backs in Keenan Phillips, PJ Martin and Trae'von Dunbar. Their ability to control the line of scrimmage could actually benefit an UNDER wager by sustaining long possessions and reducing the number of opportunities for both offenses.

Marshall's offense has also demonstrated a substantial difference between yardage and scoring production. The Thundering Herd have averaged 406.5 yards but only 22 points per game, suggesting problems converting offensive movement into touchdowns.

The quarterback situation adds another consideration. Zion Turner completed 18 of 27 passes for 219 yards and two touchdowns following Marshall's six-turnover loss to Coastal Carolina, but the broader offensive evaluation remains unsettled.

An independent scoring projection calls for approximately 60 combined points, compared with the market total of 64.5. That provides additional support for the UNDER.

The market has moved upward from earlier totals around 62.5, creating a better number for UNDER bettors. The strongest historical system and the independent scoring projection both favor the lower-scoring outcome, despite the explosive potential of South Alabama's offense.

Play to: UNDER 64.5.

1* Free Pick on Florida International -10

FIU's defense at home is the whole story here, and Middle Tennessee brings nothing on the road to crack it.

The Panthers are allowing 14.67 points a game through 6 games this season.

Over their last 5 that number drops to 13.8.

At home it gets uglier for opponents.

FIU held New Mexico State to 3, Long Island to 3, and Buffalo to 20.

That's 3 home games, 3 wins, and under 9 points allowed per game in Miami.

SP+ backs it up.

FIU's defense ranks 50th nationally, strong territory for a Conference USA team.

Now look at Middle Tennessee away from home this season.

Shut out 55-0 at Kansas.

Held to 13 at Jacksonville State.

Scored 26 in a loss at Marshall.

The Blue Raiders have not won a true road game in the results above, and the offense disappears when it travels.

The common opponent tells you plenty.

FIU went to Jacksonville State and lost 27-24 on the final margin.

Middle Tennessee went to the same building and lost 23-13, never really in it.

MTSU needed home field just to sneak past Delaware 33-30 last week.

That's the ceiling right now.

The only knock on FIU is the offense, 19.67 a game and ranked 119th in SP+.

But they won't need 30 here.

If Middle Tennessee scores like it has on the road, 17 points wins this by double digits.

I like Florida International

Free Play from Doc’s Sports: Take #387 Michigan State Spartans over UCLA Bruins (3:30 p.m., Saturday, October 24, CBS)

UCLA has been a pleasant surprise in the Big Ten this season, standing as the only unbeaten team in either the Big Ten or SEC. Still, this is a hefty number to lay with a backup quarterback. The Bruins were one-dimensional against Wisconsin, and I expect Michigan State to make running the football difficult again.

The Spartans are rebuilding under a new coach, but they’ve shown they can compete, taking Illinois and Northwestern down to the wire. I expect another competitive effort here, with Michigan State keeping the final margin within 7–10 points.

OVER 53.5

Detroit's offense is averaging nearly 33 PPG and Goff has been surgical with 12 TD passes and zero turnovers. Now he gets an extra week to prepare for a Green Bay defense whose recent improvement came against backup QBs and a struggling Dallas attack. That's a different assignment than dealing with this Lions offense. The problem for Detroit? Its defense is surrendering more than 400 yards per game, giving Love and Green Bay plenty of opportunities to answer. With Jacobs expected back, the Packers have another weapon to keep the scoreboard moving. This one has shootout written all over it. Locking this in early. My selection is on the 'under' between Middle Tennessee State and Florida International at 7 pm et on Tuesday.

We missed with the 'under' in Florida International's game against Jacksonville State last week as a fast scoring start ultimately did us in. I won't hesitate to go back to the well with the same play here, however. Middle Tennessee State gained just shy of 7.0 yards per play last time out against Delaware. That was at home against a weaker opponent than it will face here. Prior to that game, the Blue Raiders had been limited to 5.5 yards per play or less in four straight games - only eclipsing that mark previously against an FCS opponent in Murray State. FIU wants to run the football and I expect it to be able to here as a double-digit home favorite. Look for the Panthers to control proceedings and lean on their defense that has held four of six opponents to 4.0 yards per play or less this season. Take the under (8*).

Our selection is on the Detroit Red Wings/Seattle Kraken game to finish OVER the total on Tuesday at 9:47pm ET for a number of reasons. Here are some of the more important ones:

Detroit is scoring lots right now, putting up 10 goals over it's L3 games.

The Red Wings are going to need to score quite a bit on Tuesday to have a chance as well.

These teams played just under two weeks ago and the game finished with a 6-3 final score.

Seattle has seen six of it's L7 games feature seven or more goals.

The play is on the OVER.

Jets vs Blues NHL Free Pick

The Angle(s): The Winnipeg Jets roll into St. Louis with the Connor Hellebuyck saga hanging over the locker room, and his suspension ending Friday only adds to the noise. Stuart Skinner has held the fort, but backup Clay Stevenson has struggled badly, and the Jets are coming off a home loss to the Carolina Hurricanes.

The St. Louis Blues return home to open a five-game homestand and have been reliable in this role, winning seven of their last nine games as home favorites. Their top-10 penalty kill also matches up well against a Winnipeg power play that has carried its offense. I'll take the home team while the Jets' off-ice distraction peaks.

The Bet: Blues (3%).

Key Angle: It's important to remember that Ricky never makes a bet on any game based on just one angle. In order to make the grade, all his premium picks must meet several important criteria. He doesn't share all his secrets within his analysis, instead he chooses to reveal only the angle that he feels is the most significant. Here in this game the recent history of these two teams is particularly significant.

- The Thunder are 1-3 in their last 4 games.

- The Spurs are 6-4 in the last 10 head to head meetings.

- The Thunder are 1-3 in their last 4 road games.

Verdict: The value is on the home favorite.

Marc David's NHL Free Pick

We really like over in this matchup. The Kings (0-4-2) are the only winless team in the NHL, and the defense is the biggest reason why. They’re allowing 4.17 goals per game, third-worst in the league. They now start a five-game road trip, and G Anton Forsberg (0-1-1, 2.63 GAA) has stopped just 88.3% of the shots he’s faced. That’s an open door for a Caps team that likes to shoot.

The Capitals (5-3-0) have been scoring in bunches, with 28 goals through eight games. They’ve been especially good at home, winning four of five at Capital One Arena. Their own defense hasn’t been airtight though, allowing 24 goals.

A Caps offense that’s rolling, a Kings defense that can’t get stops, and a Kings team desperate to open things up and finally get a win. Give us the over.

This is a FREE PLAY on the OVER.

For my best free pick on the board for Tuesday in the NBA opening night I am looking here at the Oklahoma City Thunder at the San Antonio Spurs. Rare chance here to get the best team in the NBA at plus points prices and that is where I will be here on Tuesday night. Sure this is also a revenge chance for the Thunder but I just do not think this is the better team and the Thunder should be ready to go due to their regular season struggles with this team. Look for the Thunder to pull away mid 4th quarter in this one.
