MLB Picks Today: Best Bets & Predictions for September 4, 2026
Early Friday MLB Card β Updated September 3, 2026
Looking for the best MLB picks today? Rocketman Sports breaks down the Friday baseball betting board with our strongest early moneyline positions, pitching matchups, projected final scores and expert MLB betting resources.
Baseball is different from football because price matters as much as the team.
A favorite at -120 can be worth playing while that same team at -165 may offer very little value. An underdog at +140 may be attractive even if we believe it wins fewer than half of the time.
That is why every Rocketman Sports MLB pick should be evaluated together with the available moneyline, starting pitcher and current market price.
We are also not interested in posting a pick on every game simply because it is on the schedule. The goal of this page is to identify a smaller number of MLB betting situations we believe deserve the most attention.

MLB Picks Today β Quick Picks
| Game | Rocketman Early Pick | Projected Score |
|---|---|---|
| Blue Jays at Royals | Royals ML -120 or Better | Royals 5, Blue Jays 4 |
| Cubs at Marlins | Cubs ML -125 or Better | Cubs 5, Marlins 3 |
| Yankees at Padres | Yankees ML -125 or Better | Yankees 5, Padres 3 |
| Braves at Phillies | Braves ML -105 or Better | Braves 4, Phillies 3 |
These are early Friday positions. MLB lines, starting pitchers and lineups can change before first pitch. Always compare the current number with the recommended price before wagering.
Best MLB Bet #1: Kansas City Royals Moneyline vs Blue Jays
Pick: Kansas City Royals ML -120 or Better
Projected Score: Royals 5, Blue Jays 4
Kansas City gives us one of the better starting-pitching price combinations on Friday’s board.
The expected matchup has Daniel Lynch starting for Kansas City against Jameson Taillon for Toronto.
Lynch enters the matchup with substantially better run-prevention numbers than Taillon, while Kansas City gets the benefit of playing at Kauffman Stadium.
The important factor is price.
We do not want to lay a large number with Kansas City simply because we prefer the pitching matchup.
A moneyline around -115 to -120 still gives us a reasonable price for a team we project to win slightly more often than the market’s break-even requirement.
Taillon has had difficulty consistently preventing runs this season, while Lynch gives the Royals a better chance of keeping Toronto from creating a large early advantage.
This does not project as a blowout.
Our projected score is Kansas City 5, Toronto 4.
That is why we prefer the moneyline rather than forcing Kansas City -1.5.
Rocketman Sports MLB Pick: Royals ML -120 or Better
Best MLB Bet #2: Chicago Cubs Moneyline vs Marlins
Pick: Chicago Cubs ML -125 or Better
Projected Score: Cubs 5, Marlins 3
The Cubs open a road series in Miami with Shota Imanaga expected to oppose Janson Junk.
This is another situation where we prefer the straight moneyline.
Imanaga has the strikeout ability to control a lineup when his command is working, while the Cubs bring a deeper offensive group into the matchup.
Chicago also has multiple hitters capable of generating extra-base damage rather than needing to string together four or five singles in one inning.
Miami has hitters capable of creating problems, so this is not a game where we want to lay a large run-line price.
The current moneyline around -120 gives Chicago a much more reasonable path.
Our projection is Cubs 5, Marlins 3.
That supports a Chicago moneyline wager while still acknowledging that Miami is capable of making the game competitive.
Rocketman Sports MLB Pick: Cubs ML -125 or Better
Best MLB Bet #3: Yankees Moneyline at Padres
Pick: New York Yankees ML -125 or Better
Projected Score: Yankees 5, Padres 3
Yankees-Padres is one of Friday’s highest-profile MLB games and gives us an interesting starting-pitching matchup.
New York is expected to start Max Fried against San Diego veteran Walker Buehler.
Fried enters with the stronger season-long ERA, but there is an important qualification.
He recently returned from an elbow injury and is expected to work under a reduced pitch count.
Normally that would make us hesitant to back the Yankees.
However, New York has prepared for the situation by moving Will Warren into a piggyback role behind Fried.
That gives the Yankees a way to bridge the gap between Fried and the late-inning bullpen without asking their starter to throw 100 pitches.
Buehler has been solid at times, including a strong August, but his overall season numbers remain more vulnerable than Fried’s.
The Yankees also enter the series with a comfortable Wild Card position while San Diego is fighting for its postseason life.
Motivation does not automatically create value, and we never want to pay a premium simply because a team “needs” the game.
At approximately -120 to -125, however, we believe New York’s combination of starting pitching and overall roster strength is worth backing.
Our projected final is Yankees 5, Padres 3.
Rocketman Sports MLB Pick: Yankees ML -125 or Better
Best MLB Bet #4: Atlanta Braves Moneyline at Phillies
Pick: Atlanta Braves ML -105 or Better
Projected Score: Braves 4, Phillies 3
This may be the best pure pitching matchup on Friday’s board.
Atlanta is expected to send Chris Sale to the mound against Philadelphia left-hander Cristopher SΓ‘nchez.
Both pitchers have produced excellent seasons.
That is exactly why we do not want to lay a substantial favorite price with either team.
The early market has this game close to a pick’em.
At that type of price, we give Atlanta a small edge because Sale has been one of the most dominant starters in baseball this season and brings elite strikeout ability into a matchup where every run could matter.
Philadelphia has an excellent lineup and SΓ‘nchez has been outstanding, so this is not a game where we expect Atlanta to create separation easily.
Our projection is Atlanta 4, Philadelphia 3.
That means our interest disappears if the Braves become an expensive favorite.
At approximately -105 or better, however, we are willing to back Sale in what should be a close game.
Rocketman Sports MLB Pick: Braves ML -105 or Better

Why Price Matters More in MLB Betting
One of the biggest mistakes bettors make is evaluating MLB picks like football point spreads.
Most football spread wagers are priced near -110.
Baseball is different.
One team might be -220 while another underdog is +180.
That completely changes the winning percentage required to make money.
A bettor laying -200 needs to win at a much higher rate than a bettor regularly playing +140 underdogs.
That is why our MLB Picks Today page includes recommended price limits.
If we recommend Kansas City at -120 or better and the line moves to -155, that is no longer the same wager.
The team is the same.
The value is not.
Why We Prefer Moneylines on Today’s Card
All four of our early Friday selections are moneyline positions.
That is intentional.
Several of these games project to be close enough that laying -1.5 runs adds unnecessary risk.
Kansas City-Toronto and Atlanta-Philadelphia both project as one-run games.
A bettor does not gain anything by correctly predicting the winner and then losing because the team only wins by one.
There will be days when the run line offers the better price.
Friday’s early card currently looks stronger to us on the moneyline.
MLB Starting Pitchers Matter
No major American betting market is influenced by one individual player quite like baseball can be influenced by the starting pitcher.
A pitching change can dramatically alter:
- The moneyline
- The run line
- The game total
- First-five-inning markets
- Player props
- The overall expected scoring environment
That is why all early MLB selections are conditional on the expected starting pitchers remaining in place.
If a scheduled pitcher is scratched, the game needs to be handicapped again.
MLB First Five Innings Betting
First-five-inning wagers can be useful when we have a strong opinion about the starting-pitching matchup but less confidence in the bullpens.
For Friday, Kansas City and Atlanta are two games where the first-five market deserves additional attention once the final prices become available.
That does not mean the first-five wager will automatically be better than the full-game moneyline.
The price needs to justify the change in market.
We will compare those numbers again before first pitch.
MLB Games We Are Monitoring
Several other Friday games remain on our watch list even though they have not made the official early card.
Tampa Bay-Texas is interesting because the Rays have the stronger overall season record, but published probable-pitcher information has not been completely consistent across current sources.
We would rather wait for confirmation than publish a selection based on the wrong pitching matchup.
Arizona-Houston is another interesting game because neither expected starting pitcher has produced dominant season-long numbers. That could eventually create a total opportunity if the market price is right.
We will also continue monitoring Boston-Baltimore because the teams are involved in an important American League Wild Card race.
How Rocketman Sports Builds MLB Picks
Our MLB handicapping process looks beyond a team’s simple win-loss record.
We consider starting pitching, bullpen availability, current lineups, injuries, ballpark factors, weather, recent workload, price and market movement.
We also care about whether the available odds still offer value.
A team can be the most likely winner and still be a poor wager if the sportsbook price is too expensive.
That distinction is critical in baseball.

MLB Picks Today FAQ
What are the best MLB picks for September 4?
Our early Friday MLB card includes Kansas City moneyline against Toronto, Chicago Cubs moneyline against Miami, New York Yankees moneyline against San Diego and Atlanta Braves moneyline against Philadelphia. Prices and starting pitchers should be checked again before wagering.
What is the best MLB bet today?
Kansas City is one of our favorite early positions because the expected starting-pitching matchup gives Daniel Lynch an advantage over Jameson Taillon while the Royals are still available around a relatively short moneyline price.
Who are the best MLB handicappers?
Rocketman Sports maintains a separate Best MLB Handicappers guide comparing documented profit, ROI, sample size and specialty. Current featured experts include R&R Totals, Marc Lyle, Matt Fargo, Steve Janus, Marc David, Ricky Tran and Rocky Atkinson.
Why don’t MLB picks use winning percentage alone?
Baseball moneylines can range from large favorites to substantial plus-money underdogs. A handicapper can therefore produce a profit while winning fewer than half of his selections if the average winning price is high enough.
Should I bet MLB picks early?
Sometimes. Early betting can capture a better price, but MLB carries more starting-pitcher and lineup uncertainty than many sports. Always confirm the expected pitcher and monitor the market after starting lineups are announced.
How often is MLB Picks Today updated?
This page is designed to be updated every MLB betting day with current matchups, prices, starting pitchers and selections.
Final MLB Picks for September 4
Our early Friday card currently features Kansas City ML -120 or better, Cubs ML -125 or better, Yankees ML -125 or better and Braves ML -105 or better.
The prices are part of the selections.
If the market moves significantly beyond those thresholds, we may pass or update the recommended wager.
