Bills vs Texans Prediction: Why We Like Buffalo -1.5
Pick: Buffalo Bills -1.5 or better
Projected Score: Buffalo 24, Houston 20
The first thing to understand about our Bills vs Texans prediction is that the raw Rocketman NFL Power Ratings do not create a major betting edge.
Buffalo currently owns an RPR of +5.0.
Houston enters at +1.8.
That makes Buffalo approximately 3.2 points better on a neutral field.
Subtract roughly two points because Houston is playing at home and our raw fair line becomes approximately:
Buffalo -1.2
The sportsbook market is approximately Buffalo -1.5.
So the raw numbers alone essentially agree with the market.
But the matchup-specific injury situation moves us slightly toward Buffalo.
Houston enters the opener without several important offensive pieces.
Wide receiver Jayden Higgins suffered a season-ending ACL injury during training camp.
Tank Dell will also begin the season on injured reserve as he continues working back from his severe knee injury.
Starting right tackle Braden Smith is on injured reserve as well.
Those losses affect both C.J. Stroud’s receiving options and Houston’s ability to protect him.
Buffalo does not need to dominate this game.
At -1.5, the Bills essentially need to win by a field goal.
Our projection has Buffalo winning by four.
Rocketman Best Bet: Buffalo Bills -1.5 or better.
Rocketman NFL Power Ratings: Bills vs Texans
The Rocketman NFL Power Ratings make this one of the closest games on the Week 1 board.
Buffalo Bills RPR: +5.0
Houston Texans RPR: +1.8
Neutral-Field Difference: Buffalo 3.2 points
Houston Home-Field Adjustment: approximately 2.0 points
Rocketman Fair Line: Buffalo -1.2
Current Market: Buffalo approximately -1.5
The small difference between our number and the sportsbook is another reminder that power ratings are a starting point rather than an automatic betting system.
In this matchup, the case for Buffalo comes more from Houston’s personnel losses and Buffalo’s offensive versatility than from a large numerical model gap.

What Happened When Buffalo Played Houston Last Season?
Houston defeated Buffalo 23-19 at home last November.
The Texans accomplished that without C.J. Stroud.
Davis Mills started at quarterback and threw two touchdown passes.
But Houston’s defense was the real story.
The Texans sacked Josh Allen eight times and intercepted him twice.
Will Anderson Jr. recorded 2.5 sacks.
Danielle Hunter added two more.
Buffalo managed only three offensive points over the final 39-plus minutes.
James Cook did run for 116 yards, including a long touchdown, while Khalil Shakir produced 110 receiving yards.
The loss showed exactly what Houston’s defense can do when it creates obvious passing situations.
That performance is the biggest reason we are not making Buffalo a high-confidence Week 1 wager despite Houston’s offensive injuries.
Buffalo Bills 2026 Outlook
Buffalo remains one of the AFC’s strongest teams because everything begins with Josh Allen.
Allen completed 69.4% of his passes last season for 3,668 yards and 25 touchdowns.
He also rushed for 579 yards and 14 touchdowns.
That dual-threat ability creates matchup problems that traditional quarterback statistics cannot fully capture.
The Bills also enter 2026 with one of the league’s best rushing attacks.
James Cook rushed for 1,621 yards while averaging 5.2 yards per carry last season.
That becomes especially important against Houston.
The Texans want to pressure Allen.
Buffalo’s best response may be making Houston defend Cook and the running game first.
The Bills also strengthened the receiving corps with DJ Moore joining Khalil Shakir, Keon Coleman, Dalton Kincaid and Dawson Knox.
That gives Allen more ways to punish defenses that devote extra resources to containing his legs.
Buffalo’s New Defensive Look
Buffalo also enters 2026 with a different defensive structure.
The Bills have shifted toward a 3-4 base alignment under defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard.
Greg Rousseau and Bradley Chubb are expected to work primarily as edge-rushing outside linebackers.
Ed Oliver remains one of the key interior defenders.
The change could become particularly important against Houston’s reshuffled offensive line.
Buffalo’s defense was not always dominant in 2025.
The Bills allowed more than 2,300 rushing yards during the regular season.
But Week 1 provides an opportunity for the new structure to attack a Houston offense dealing with several important personnel changes.
Houston Texans 2026 Outlook
Houston’s defense remains the primary reason the Texans can beat virtually anyone.
The 2025 Texans allowed only 4,713 total yards during the regular season.
The defense generated 47 sacks and intercepted 19 passes.
Danielle Hunter finished with 15 sacks.
Will Anderson Jr. added 12 sacks.
Calen Bullock, Kamari Lassiter and Jalen Pitre each recorded four interceptions.
That defense is the foundation of our respect for Houston in this matchup.
The question is offense.
C.J. Stroud threw for 3,041 yards with 19 touchdowns and eight interceptions last season.
Those are solid numbers.
But Houston needs more offensive consistency if it wants to challenge the top teams in the AFC.
The Week 1 injury situation makes that challenge more difficult.
Houston’s Wide Receiver Injuries
The Texans enter Week 1 without two receivers who were expected to play important roles.
Jayden Higgins is out for the season following an ACL injury.
Higgins caught 41 passes for 525 yards and six touchdowns as a rookie.
Tank Dell will begin the season on injured reserve as he continues working back from his major knee injury.
That leaves Nico Collins as Houston’s clear No. 1 receiving option.
The Texans recently added Kayshon Boutte, who is learning a new offense only weeks before the opener.
Jaylin Noel and Xavier Hutchinson will also need to handle larger roles.
C.J. Stroud is capable of elevating the players around him.
But losing multiple receiving options narrows Houston’s margin for error against Buffalo.
Braden Smith Injury Creates Another Houston Concern
Houston invested heavily in improving its offensive line during the offseason.
Braden Smith was supposed to become a major part of that improvement at right tackle.
Instead, Smith will miss the beginning of the season after being placed on injured reserve.
That matters because Buffalo now has multiple edge-rushing options capable of attacking Houston’s protection.
The Texans can potentially use veteran Trent Brown at right tackle.
But losing a projected starter before Week 1 reduces continuity.
If Buffalo can pressure Stroud without consistently blitzing, the Bills should be able to devote more defenders toward Nico Collins and Houston’s underneath passing game.
Key Matchup: Josh Allen vs Houston Pass Rush
This is the matchup Houston won decisively last season.
The Texans recorded eight sacks against Allen.
That cannot happen again if Buffalo expects to win.
Houston can attack with Will Anderson Jr. and Danielle Hunter from opposite sides.
Derek Stingley Jr., Kamari Lassiter and Jalen Pitre give the Texans enough coverage talent behind that pass rush to force Allen to hold the football.
Buffalo needs to remain balanced.
James Cook’s success last year showed that Houston can be attacked on the ground.
If Cook forces the Texans to respect the running game, Allen should have more manageable passing situations.
Key Matchup: James Cook vs Houston Run Defense
Cook may be the most important Buffalo skill-position player Sunday.
He rushed for 116 yards against Houston last November despite the Bills losing the game.
Buffalo rushed for 2,714 yards as a team during the 2025 regular season.
That balance keeps defenses from simply constructing every call around Allen.
If the Bills consistently generate five or six yards on early downs, Houston’s elite pass rush loses some of its effectiveness.
Buffalo does not want to spend Sunday repeatedly facing third-and-8 against Anderson and Hunter.
The running game is the best way to prevent that.
Key Matchup: C.J. Stroud vs Buffalo Secondary
Houston will still have opportunities through the air.
Nico Collins is one of the most physically difficult receivers in the AFC to cover.
Buffalo’s secondary also has some uncertainty.
Christian Benford is the established top outside corner, but the Bills have younger options surrounding him.
Safety Chauncey Gardner-Johnson has also been working back from a lower-body issue.
If Stroud gets time in the pocket, Houston can create explosive plays.
The challenge will be generating those plays without Higgins and Dell stretching Buffalo’s coverage.
Bills Week 1 Injury Watch
Buffalo is not completely healthy either.
Linebacker Terrel Bernard has been dealing with a minor injury and his status should be monitored.
Safety Chauncey Gardner-Johnson has also been working back toward full health.
Michael Hoecht is returning from an Achilles injury and is trending toward being available.
On offense, center Connor McGovern returned to practice after a hamstring injury and expects to be ready for Week 1.
Khalil Shakir has also dealt with a lower-body issue during the preseason.
We will update this preview when the official Week 1 injury report becomes available.
Bills vs Texans Public Betting
Early public betting currently favors Buffalo by ticket count.
Action Network’s current snapshot shows approximately 56% of spread bets on Buffalo.
However, Buffalo is receiving only approximately 44% of the spread money in that same snapshot.
That means Houston is currently attracting a larger share of the dollars wagered despite receiving fewer individual tickets.
This can suggest larger average wagers are landing on Houston.
It does not prove that professional or sharp bettors are responsible.
This is worth watching because it runs against our Buffalo lean.
If Houston money eventually pushes the line from Bills -1.5 toward pick’em, Buffalo may become more attractive.
If Buffalo moves through -2.5 toward -3, we would become considerably less interested.

Why Buffalo -1.5 Is Better Than Buffalo -3
Key numbers matter in NFL betting.
Three is one of the most important margins in football.
At Buffalo -1.5, a field-goal victory covers.
At Buffalo -3, the same result only pushes.
At Buffalo -3.5, a three-point victory loses.
Our projected score is Buffalo 24, Houston 20.
That gives us a four-point margin.
We are comfortable laying -1.5.
We would become much less interested if the market moved beyond -2.5.
Target Price: Buffalo -1.5 or better.
Bills vs Texans Total Prediction
Current Total: 44.5
Projected Score: Buffalo 24, Houston 20
Projected Total: 44 Points
Our Bills vs Texans prediction creates only a small lean toward the Under.
Houston’s defense is capable of disrupting Buffalo’s offense.
Buffalo also has enough defensive advantages against Houston’s injured offensive line and depleted receiving group to prevent this game from becoming a shootout.
The danger is Josh Allen.
Buffalo can score quickly whenever Allen creates explosive plays with his arm or legs.
Houston’s defense is also aggressive enough to generate turnovers that create short fields.
Our projected 24-20 final lands one-half point below the current total.
That is not enough for an official total wager.
Rocketman Total Lean: Under 44.5, but PASS unless a better number develops.
Why Houston Is Still Dangerous
Our Buffalo pick should not be confused with disrespecting Houston.
The Texans beat Buffalo last season with their backup quarterback.
The defense has elite players at every level.
Houston also has home-field advantage.
If the Texans generate pressure the way they did last November, Buffalo can lose this game outright.
That is why we are not laying a large number.
At -1.5, we are betting that Buffalo’s offensive talent and Houston’s offensive injury issues are enough to create a narrow Bills victory.

Final Bills vs Texans Prediction
Our early Bills vs Texans prediction is Buffalo 24, Houston 20.
Houston’s defense is good enough to keep this close and has already demonstrated that it can create major problems for Josh Allen.
That keeps us from getting overly aggressive with Buffalo.
But Houston enters Week 1 without Jayden Higgins, Tank Dell and starting right tackle Braden Smith.
Those injuries create additional pressure on C.J. Stroud, Nico Collins and a reshuffled offensive supporting cast.
Buffalo counters with Josh Allen, James Cook and a more diversified group of receiving options.
Our raw power-rating number is essentially aligned with the sportsbook.
The matchup-specific personnel situation provides the final push toward Buffalo.
