NFL Public Betting & Sharp Money Today: Week 1 Betting Splits
Updated September 3, 2026
Where is the public betting in NFL Week 1 — and where is the bigger money landing?
Rocketman Sports tracks NFL public betting percentages, betting splits, money percentages, line movement and potential sharp-money indicators to identify games where public perception may not match the actual betting market.
We are especially interested when the majority of individual tickets are on one team while the majority of the money is on the other side.
That does not automatically mean the side receiving more money is the correct wager.
But when tickets, money and line movement tell different stories, we want to investigate.

NFL Week 1 Public Betting & Sharp Money – Quick Look
The following games currently show some of the most interesting differences between the percentage of spread tickets and the percentage of spread money.
| Game | Ticket Side | Money Side | Rocketman Read |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cowboys at Giants | Giants – 68% | Cowboys – 95% | Major money-vs-ticket disagreement |
| Saints at Lions | Saints – 79% | Lions – 67% | Possible Detroit contrarian signal |
| Cardinals at Chargers | Cardinals – 63% | Chargers – 80% | Larger-money support on favorite |
| Browns at Jaguars | Browns – 62% | Jaguars – 73% | Potential Jacksonville sharp side |
| Bills at Texans | Bills – 54% | Texans – 70% | Houston is one of our favorite early signals |
| Falcons at Steelers | Falcons – 59% | Steelers – 61% | Worth monitoring as kickoff approaches |
Betting percentages are snapshots and can change quickly. Different sportsbooks can also report very different betting splits because each book has a different customer base. The percentages above are based on the latest aggregated Week 1 public-betting report available when this page was updated.
Sharp Money Watch #1: Cowboys vs Giants
Current Market: Dallas approximately -2.5
This may be the most dramatic tickets-versus-money split on the entire Week 1 board.
Approximately 68% of spread tickets were reported on the New York Giants.
Yet approximately 95% of the spread money was reported on Dallas.
Think about what that means.
Nearly seven out of every 10 individual spread wagers were reportedly taking the Giants.
But the overwhelming majority of actual dollars wagered were backing the Cowboys.
That suggests the average Dallas wager has been substantially larger than the average New York wager in the reported betting sample.
Dallas also opened around -1.5 and has been trading closer to -2.5.
That line movement toward Dallas makes the situation even more interesting.
We are not declaring Dallas an automatic bet simply because of the splits.
However, this is precisely the type of situation Rocketman Sports wants to track:
- Public ticket count favors one side.
- Money favors the opposite side dramatically.
- The betting line moves toward the money side.
Rocketman Sharp Money Read: Dallas deserves serious attention at the current number.
Sharp Money Watch #2: Bills vs Texans
Current Market: Buffalo approximately -1.5 / Houston +1.5
This is another classic example of why simply looking at which team has more bets can be misleading.
Buffalo has attracted approximately 54% of the spread tickets.
Houston has attracted approximately 70% of the spread money.
The public sees Buffalo and immediately recognizes one of the biggest names in the AFC.
And because the Bills are laying less than a field goal, recreational bettors may view Buffalo -1.5 as inexpensive.
But the larger-money split is telling a different story.
Fewer tickets are backing Houston, but those wagers represent considerably more money.
That supports the position we already identified on our NFL Picks Today page.
➤ SEE WHY HOUSTON +1.5 MADE OUR NFL WEEK 1 CARD
Rocketman Sharp Money Read: Houston +1.5 remains one of the most interesting early Week 1 underdog positions.
Sharp Money Watch #3: Saints vs Lions
Current Market: Detroit approximately -6.5 to -7
New Orleans has been one of the more popular Week 1 underdogs.
Approximately 79% of reported spread tickets have backed the Saints.
Yet Detroit has attracted approximately 67% of the spread money.
This is an especially interesting example because public bettors frequently like underdogs when the number looks large.
New Orleans does not have to win.
A bettor getting nearly a touchdown simply needs the Saints to keep the game competitive.
That can make the underdog psychologically appealing.
But the money split suggests larger wagers have been more interested in laying the points with Detroit.
The key number here matters enormously.
Detroit -6.5 is significantly more attractive than Detroit -7.5.
Anyone considering the Lions should therefore monitor the market closely.
Rocketman Sharp Money Read: Detroit is worth investigating, but the number matters more than the public percentage.
Sharp Money Watch #4: Cardinals vs Chargers
Current Market: Los Angeles Chargers approximately -10 to -10.5
The Chargers are a big Week 1 favorite, but the betting split is unusual.
Arizona has attracted approximately 63% of spread tickets.
Los Angeles has attracted approximately 80% of the spread money.
This is a large gap.
It indicates that while more individual bettors are taking the double-digit underdog, the larger wagers have been considerably more supportive of the Chargers.
There is one major warning:
Laying double digits in the NFL always demands caution.
A bettor can handicap the game correctly, watch the favorite dominate for most of the afternoon and still lose the wager because of one late touchdown.
So while the money split is impressive, it does not automatically make Chargers -10.5 a premium play.
Rocketman Sharp Money Read: Strong money signal, but price sensitivity keeps this on the watch list rather than making it an automatic bet.
Sharp Money Watch #5: Browns vs Jaguars
Current Market: Jacksonville approximately -7 to -7.5
Cleveland has attracted approximately 62% of the spread tickets, while Jacksonville has received approximately 73% of the reported money.
Again, we have fewer wagers representing more dollars on the favorite.
Jacksonville is another team where the key number is extremely important.
Laying -6.5 is materially different from laying -7.5.
Seven is one of the most important numbers in NFL point-spread betting.
That means we could agree with the larger-money side but still pass on the game if the best price disappears.
Rocketman Sharp Money Read: Jacksonville is worth watching, especially if -6.5 becomes available.
Sharp Money Watch #6: Falcons vs Steelers
Current Market: Pittsburgh approximately -3
Atlanta has received approximately 59% of the spread tickets.
Pittsburgh has received approximately 61% of the money.
This difference is not as dramatic as Dallas-New York or Buffalo-Houston.
But because the public and money are on opposite sides, it belongs on the radar.
The spread sitting around three also makes this game particularly sensitive to movement.
Pittsburgh -2.5 would be significantly more attractive than Pittsburgh -3.5.
Rocketman Sharp Money Read: Monitor the line before making a decision.
🔥 Which of These Games Are We Actually Betting?
Public splits help identify opportunities. They do not replace handicapping.
Week 1 NFL Public Favorites
Another way to use betting data is to identify teams attracting overwhelming support.
Heavy public betting does not mean we automatically fade the team.
But it can tell us when market perception may be becoming one-sided.
Some of the Week 1 teams receiving substantial support at individual sportsbooks include:
- Chicago against Carolina
- Los Angeles Rams against San Francisco
- Tennessee against the Jets
- Detroit against New Orleans
- Las Vegas against Miami
- Philadelphia against Washington
- Denver against Kansas City at some sportsbooks
The important question is not simply:
“Who is the public betting?”
It is:
“Has public perception created a bad number?”
Week 1 NFL Unders Getting Big Money
The Week 1 totals market is also interesting.
One aggregated betting report showed a very unusual amount of early money on NFL Unders.
Ten of the 16 opening-week games were reportedly receiving at least 70% of their total money on the Under at the time of the snapshot.
Two of the strongest Under-money situations were:
- Packers at Vikings
- Ravens at Colts
Both were reported near 90% of total handle on the Under.
That is especially notable because recreational football bettors traditionally enjoy betting Overs.
We already identified Packers-Vikings Under 45.5 as one of the early selections on our NFL Picks Today page.

What Is NFL Public Betting?
Public betting refers to how individual wagers are distributed across the available sides of a betting market.
The most common measurement is the percentage of betting tickets.
Suppose 1,000 wagers have been placed on a game:
- 700 tickets on Kansas City
- 300 tickets on Denver
Kansas City would have 70% of the tickets.
That tells us where more bettors are wagering.
It does not tell us how much money has been wagered.
What Is NFL Money Percentage?
Money percentage — often called handle percentage — measures the actual dollars wagered rather than the number of betting tickets.
Using the example above:
- Kansas City could have 70% of the tickets but only 40% of the money.
- Denver could have just 30% of the tickets but 60% of the money.
That would tell us the average Denver wager is much larger.
This type of disagreement is one of the things professional bettors monitor.
What Is Sharp Money?
“Sharp money” generally refers to wagers believed to come from experienced, respected or professional bettors.
There is an important limitation.
We usually cannot know with certainty who placed a particular wager.
That means a large ticket-versus-money discrepancy should be considered a potential sharp-money indicator, not proof that professional bettors are definitely on that side.
This distinction is important.
We want to use betting-market information intelligently rather than turning it into another simplistic system.
What Is Reverse Line Movement?
Reverse line movement occurs when the betting line moves opposite what most bettors would expect based on the ticket distribution.
For example:
Suppose 75% of spread tickets are betting Team A -3.
Normally, heavy demand for Team A should push the favorite toward -3.5.
Instead, the sportsbook moves Team A from -3 to -2.5.
That deserves attention.
The sportsbook is making Team A cheaper despite most bettors already wanting Team A.
Potential explanations include:
- Larger wagers on Team B
- Respected wagers on Team B
- New injury or lineup information
- Market movement at influential sportsbooks
- The sportsbook adjusting toward a more accurate number
Reverse line movement is one of the strongest situations we want to monitor throughout the NFL season.
Why We Don’t Blindly Fade the Public
Rocketman Sports has always placed significant emphasis on identifying situations where public perception may be wrong.
But there is a major difference between:
looking for public overreaction
and
blindly betting the opposite of the public.
The public can absolutely be right.
Good teams really are good.
Bad teams really can be bad.
A 75% public favorite can still cover easily.
The opportunity comes when public perception appears to have influenced the betting number more than the underlying matchup deserves.
That is why we combine:
- Ticket percentages
- Money percentages
- Opening lines
- Current lines
- Reverse line movement
- Key numbers
- Injury information
- Matchup analysis
- Power ratings
- Projected scores
NFL Key Numbers Matter
When studying betting splits, always consider the number itself.
The most important NFL spread numbers include:
3 and 7
Games land on those margins frequently enough that crossing one of those numbers can dramatically change the value of a wager.
Examples:
- Patriots +3.5 is better than Patriots +2.5.
- Lions -6.5 is better than Lions -7.5.
- Jaguars -6.5 is better than Jaguars -7.5.
- Bengals -2.5 would be considerably more attractive than Bengals -3.5.
This is why simply saying “I like Team A” is not enough.
Successful betting means finding the correct team at the correct price.
When Should You Bet NFL Favorites and Underdogs?
The NFL betting market typically develops throughout the week.
Professional and larger wagers can begin influencing markets early.
Public volume tends to increase as Sunday approaches.
That can create a basic timing consideration:
If you like a popular favorite, earlier in the week may provide the better number.
If you like an unpopular underdog, waiting can sometimes produce additional points after public favorite money arrives.
This is not a universal rule.
Injury news or sharp action can move any market in either direction.
But understanding when different types of betting volume arrive can help bettors avoid taking the worst number.
Rocketman’s NFL Public Betting Strategy
Our ideal contrarian NFL situation looks something like this:
- A recognizable favorite attracts heavy public tickets.
- The underdog attracts significantly more money than tickets.
- The line refuses to move toward the popular favorite — or moves toward the underdog.
- Our own matchup analysis supports the unpopular side.
- Our projected score supports the wager mathematically.
- The current spread still provides value around important NFL key numbers.
When several of those factors align, we become much more interested.
That is exactly why Houston +1.5 drew our attention in Week 1.

NFL Public Betting FAQ
Where is the public betting in NFL Week 1?
Public betting varies by sportsbook. Several Week 1 games currently show large differences between ticket percentages and money percentages, including Cowboys-Giants, Saints-Lions, Cardinals-Chargers, Browns-Jaguars, Bills-Texans and Falcons-Steelers.
What is the biggest sharp-vs-public split in NFL Week 1?
One of the most dramatic current aggregated reports involves Dallas and the New York Giants. The Giants were receiving approximately 68% of individual spread tickets while Dallas was receiving approximately 95% of the spread money.
Does more money mean professional bettors are on that team?
Not necessarily. A money-versus-ticket discrepancy can be a potential sharp-money indicator, but without knowing exactly who placed the wagers and the total market volume, it should not be considered proof.
Should I always fade the NFL public?
No. Rocketman Sports uses public betting as one part of the handicap. The best situations combine betting splits with line movement, matchup analysis, injuries, power ratings and a favorable betting number.
What is reverse line movement?
Reverse line movement occurs when the betting line moves opposite what would normally be expected based on where most individual wagers are being placed.
How often is this NFL public betting page updated?
This page is designed to be updated throughout every NFL week as betting percentages, lines and market information change.
Final Week 1 Sharp Money Watch
The Week 1 situations we currently want to monitor most closely are:
- Cowboys over Giants – major money-versus-ticket disagreement
- Texans +1.5 vs Bills – larger money on the less-popular side
- Lions vs Saints – public dog tickets but more money on Detroit
- Chargers vs Cardinals – substantial money support despite fewer tickets
- Jaguars vs Browns – larger wagers appear more supportive of Jacksonville
- Packers-Vikings Under – significant early Under money
The most important thing is that these are market signals, not automatic wagers.
We will continue comparing the betting percentages with actual line movement, injuries and our own handicapping as kickoff approaches.
