The Athletics and Texas Rangers close out their three-game AL West series Wednesday afternoon at Globe Life Field. Texas enters looking for a series sweep and a fourth consecutive victory, while the Athletics are trying to snap a five-game losing streak.
At first glance, this looks like an easy game for bettors to simply back Texas. The Rangers have the better record, are playing at home and have dominated the first two games of the series. But our Athletics vs Rangers prediction takes a deeper look at the current betting percentages, Jacob Lopez against Cody Bradford, recent performance and whether the public may be overreacting to what it just saw.

Athletics vs Rangers Starting Pitchers
Jacob Lopez – Athletics
Jacob Lopez enters Wednesday with a 5-4 record and a 4.82 ERA, numbers that do not immediately jump off the page.
But Lopez has pitched considerably better recently than his overall ERA suggests.
The left-hander has allowed two earned runs or fewer in each of his previous eight appearances, giving the Athletics a legitimate chance to stay competitive during the first half of this game.
Lopez also owns a much stronger strikeout rate than Texas starter Cody Bradford. His ability to miss bats gives him another path out of trouble when runners reach base.
There is one concern.
Lopez tends to allow the baseball to get into the air, and Texas has been one of the better offenses in baseball against left-handed pitching.
That is why I am not making the Athletics moneyline my primary recommendation.
I simply believe Lopez gives Oakland a better chance of keeping this game within one run than the market and recent results might suggest.
Cody Bradford – Texas Rangers
Texas counters with Cody Bradford, who enters with a 0-3 record and a 3.42 ERA.
Bradford has been effective in a limited sample after missing much of the season, but the surface ERA may make him look more dominant than he has actually been.
His WHIP is above 1.50, and his strikeout rate is considerably lower than Lopez’s.
That means Bradford has been allowing traffic while relying heavily on contact management and limiting damage.
That approach can work, especially at Globe Life Field, but it also creates vulnerability when laying a large moneyline price.
Texas Has Dominated the First Two Games
The Rangers have controlled this series so far.
Texas won the opener 8-1 behind a dominant performance from Jacob deGrom and followed that with another eight-run performance Tuesday.
The Rangers now enter Wednesday having won three consecutive games.
The Athletics have lost five straight.
That creates an extremely powerful public narrative:
Texas is hot. Oakland is cold. Texas is at home. Just bet the Rangers again.
That may ultimately be correct, but the sportsbook does not give bettors yesterday’s price.
Texas is now laying approximately -167.
At that price, we have to determine whether the market has already accounted for the Rangers’ recent success.
This Is Exactly Where Recency Bias Can Create Value
One of the most common mistakes sports bettors make is assuming what happened yesterday is likely to happen again today.
Texas has scored eight runs in consecutive games.
The Athletics have looked terrible.
That makes the Rangers psychologically easy to bet.
But Wednesday’s pitching matchup is completely different from the first two games.
Oakland does not have to beat Texas outright for our preferred wager to win.
We simply need the Athletics to stay within one run.
Public Betting Heavily Favors Texas
The current moneyline betting percentages show approximately 80% of tickets on the Rangers.
That is exactly what we would expect.
Texas has won three straight, Oakland has lost five straight and the Rangers are trying to complete a home sweep.
But the actual money distribution tells a more interesting story.
Despite Texas receiving roughly 80% of moneyline bets, the Rangers are receiving only about 53% of the money.
That means Oakland has attracted approximately 47% of the money despite receiving only around 20% of the tickets.
That does not automatically mean the Athletics will win.
But it tells us the larger wagers have been much more willing to back Oakland than the raw public ticket count suggests.
The Athletics +1.5 Split Is Even More Interesting
The run-line market is where this game really gets my attention.
Approximately 47% of run-line tickets are on Athletics +1.5.
But those wagers account for approximately 93% of the run-line money.
That is a huge discrepancy.
On the other side, Texas -1.5 has slightly more than half the tickets but only a small percentage of the actual dollars wagered.
I never want to blindly follow betting percentages.
But when the baseball matchup already gives us reasons to consider an underdog and the ticket-versus-money split points in the same direction, it strengthens the case.
Why Athletics +1.5 Makes More Sense Than the Moneyline
I am not predicting that Oakland suddenly becomes the better baseball team.
Texas still deserves to be favored.
The Rangers have the stronger lineup and home-field advantage.
That is why my projected score still has Texas winning the game.
But baseball produces a huge number of one-run games.
If Lopez can keep Oakland competitive through five or six innings, +1.5 becomes extremely valuable.
A 3-2, 4-3 or 5-4 Texas victory all cash our wager.
Our projected score is Rangers 5, Athletics 4.
That gives Oakland a one-run loss and makes Athletics +1.5 mathematically consistent with the projection.
Texas Has Hit Left-Handed Pitching Well
This is the biggest argument against our Athletics play.
Texas has been much stronger against left-handed pitching than against right-handers this season.
The Rangers have recently shown more life offensively and should have several right-handed bats in favorable matchups against Lopez.
That makes this very different from simply betting Oakland because the public likes Texas.
There is legitimate risk.
If Lopez’s fly-ball tendency turns into home runs, the Rangers could separate quickly.
That is also one reason the Over deserves consideration.
The Athletics Are Missing Important Offensive Pieces
Oakland’s lineup has been weakened by injuries.
Several important hitters have been unavailable, and the Athletics have struggled to consistently produce runs during the second half of the season.
That is another reason I prefer +1.5 rather than calling for an outright upset.
Oakland does not necessarily need a huge offensive performance.
Four runs could be enough to keep this game inside the run line if Lopez and the bullpen can avoid one disastrous inning.
Athletics vs Rangers Total Prediction
The total is currently 8 runs.
Our projected score of Texas 5, Athletics 4 produces nine combined runs.
That makes Over 8 our secondary lean.
The betting market also strongly supports the Over, with an overwhelming percentage of both tickets and money currently landing on the high side.
Because eight gives us push protection if the game lands exactly on the number, I prefer Over 8 considerably more than I would Over 8.5.
Why the Over Has a Path
Neither starting pitcher is completely dominant.
Bradford has allowed plenty of baserunners despite his attractive ERA, while Lopez’s fly-ball profile creates home-run risk against a Rangers lineup that handles left-handed pitching well.
Both pitchers also enter with WHIPs above 1.46.
That creates opportunities for rallies even if neither starter gets hit hard immediately.
A 5-4 final is very realistic.
Athletics First Five Innings Angle
Athletics +0.5 during the first five innings is also interesting if the price is reasonable.
This bet isolates Lopez’s recent improvement and reduces exposure to Oakland’s bullpen.
If Lopez continues his recent run of allowing two earned runs or fewer, the Athletics should have an opportunity to be tied or ahead after five innings.
I still prefer the full-game +1.5 because one-run protection is valuable throughout all nine innings.
Globe Life Field Factor
Globe Life Field is considerably less hostile to pitchers than many hitter-friendly stadiums around Major League Baseball.
The retractable roof also makes outside weather less important than it would be in an open-air afternoon game.
The final roof decision is worth monitoring, but weather is not one of the primary reasons behind this handicap.
Why We Like Athletics +1.5
There are several factors supporting the underdog run line:
- Texas has 80% of moneyline tickets but only about 53% of the money.
- Athletics +1.5 has roughly 47% of run-line tickets but approximately 93% of the run-line handle.
- Jacob Lopez has allowed two earned runs or fewer in eight consecutive appearances.
- Lopez has a much stronger strikeout rate than Bradford.
- Bradford’s 3.42 ERA comes with a WHIP above 1.50.
- Texas’ consecutive eight-run games make the Rangers extremely easy for the public to back.
- Oakland does not need to win outright to cash the recommended wager.
Athletics vs Rangers Prediction
I still believe Texas is slightly more likely to win this game outright.
But I do not believe the gap between these teams Wednesday is as large as the Rangers’ current hot streak and Oakland’s losing streak make it appear.
Lopez has quietly pitched well recently, Bradford is not as dominant as his ERA initially suggests, and the betting splits show substantial larger-money support for Oakland +1.5.
This is a classic example of going against the obvious public narrative without simply being contrarian for the sake of being contrarian.
Final Score Prediction: Rangers 5, Athletics 4
Projected Margin: Rangers by 1 Run
Best Bet: Athletics +1.5
Secondary Bet: Over 8
