Padres vs Reds Starting Pitchers

Casey Mize – San Diego Padres

San Diego gives the ball to right-hander Casey Mize, who enters Wednesday with a 5-8 record, 3.45 ERA and 96 strikeouts.

Mize’s overall season numbers are much better than his recent results since joining San Diego, so this is not a matchup where I want to pretend the Padres have an untouchable ace on the mound.

However, the most important part of the matchup may be command. Mize has generally done a much better job limiting free passes than Cincinnati starter Brandon Williamson.

That becomes especially important in Great American Ball Park. Walks followed by one swing can turn into crooked innings quickly in Cincinnati.

Brandon Williamson – Cincinnati Reds

Williamson is the pitcher who makes this matchup especially interesting.

The Cincinnati left-hander enters with a 2-3 record and a 6.11 ERA and is making his first major-league start since April after being activated from the 60-day injured list.

He has also had significant control problems. Williamson issued 20 walks in 28 innings earlier this season, which creates an obvious problem against a San Diego lineup with hitters capable of punishing mistakes.

There is also a workload question.

Cincinnati does not necessarily need Williamson to provide six or seven innings. If his pitch count climbs quickly, the Reds may be forced to their bullpen early.

Why San Diego Has the Starting-Pitching Advantage

I do not believe the gap between Mize and Williamson is perfectly reflected by comparing only each pitcher’s season ERA.

Williamson is returning from a long absence, has struggled with command and may be working under a limited pitch count.

San Diego should make him throw strikes.

That is important because the Padres do not need to chase early in the count. If they can create baserunners through walks and singles, the middle of the order should eventually get opportunities with runners in scoring position.

San Diego’s Offense Needs to Cash In Its Chances

The Padres lost 4-3 Tuesday despite Fernando Tatis Jr. hitting two home runs.

The bigger issue was San Diego going 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position.

That kind of situational hitting usually creates frustration for bettors, but it can also create an opportunity if the market overreacts to one poor result.

San Diego generated opportunities. The Padres simply did not cash them in.

Against Williamson and a bullpen that may need to cover significant innings, I expect San Diego to have more scoring chances Wednesday.

Fernando Tatis Jr. Is Heating Up

Tatis was responsible for much of San Diego’s offense Tuesday with a pair of home runs.

That is a positive sign heading into a matchup against a left-handed starter.

San Diego’s lineup should contain plenty of right-handed bats around Tatis, Manny Machado, Ty France, Xander Bogaerts and others capable of putting pressure on Williamson.

When a pitcher already has control concerns, facing a lineup with right-handed power in a hitter-friendly park is not an ideal combination.

Padres vs Reds Public Betting

The moneyline is heavily tilted toward San Diego, so this is not a traditional fade-the-public spot.

But the run-line market tells a more interesting story.

One current betting split showed fewer than half of the run-line tickets on San Diego -1.5 while a much larger percentage of the actual money was backing the Padres to win by at least two runs.

That is much more interesting to me than simply seeing that the majority of moneyline bettors like San Diego.

If I am going to back the popular favorite, I want either a strong baseball reason or a ticket-versus-money discrepancy.

In this matchup, we have both.

Why I Prefer Padres -1.5 Over the Moneyline

The San Diego moneyline requires bettors to lay around -150 or more.

That is expensive.

The run line gives us plus-money potential while still taking advantage of what I believe is the biggest edge in the game: Williamson’s command and likely workload.

If San Diego gets into Cincinnati’s middle relief early, the Padres have an opportunity to create the two- or three-run inning needed to separate.

Because San Diego is the road team, it is also guaranteed to bat in the ninth inning unless the game is already over after the top half. That additional offensive opportunity can matter when laying -1.5.

Padres vs Reds Weather

Conditions in Cincinnati are expected to be extremely hot and dry for the afternoon start, with temperatures climbing into the 90s and little threat of rain.

Great American Ball Park is already one of baseball’s friendlier environments for home runs.

The heat increases the offensive potential, which is one reason I am not making the under a major play despite the betting market showing significant money there.

Padres vs Reds Total Prediction

The total is 9.5.

My projected score of San Diego 6, Cincinnati 3 produces nine total runs, which gives us a slight lean to the under.

However, I have considerably more confidence in the San Diego side than the total.

Williamson’s command, the hot weather and the ballpark all introduce enough volatility that I would not make Under 9.5 the primary wager.

First Five Innings Betting Angle

The Padres’ first-five moneyline is another option for bettors who want to isolate the starting-pitching matchup.

San Diego’s bullpen gave up the deciding runs Tuesday, so removing some of the late-inning bullpen uncertainty makes sense.

Mize does not need to dominate. He simply needs to give San Diego a better five-inning performance than Williamson.

Why We Like Padres -1.5

There are several reasons San Diego has value despite being the road favorite:

  • Williamson is making his first MLB start since April.
  • His season ERA sits above 6.00.
  • Control has been a major problem.
  • His workload could be limited.
  • San Diego’s lineup is built to punish left-handed mistakes.
  • The Padres left runners on base Tuesday but continued to create opportunities.
  • The run-line money distribution is stronger for San Diego than the ticket percentage.

Padres vs Reds Prediction

I expect Cincinnati to score enough to make this competitive early, but San Diego should create more quality scoring opportunities against Williamson and the Reds bullpen.

Mize has his own recent concerns, so I do not expect a shutout. But the pitching matchup and offensive ceiling favor the Padres.

Rather than laying a large moneyline price, I prefer San Diego -1.5 at plus money.

Final Score Prediction: Padres 6, Reds 3

Best Bet: Padres -1.5

Projected Margin: Padres by 3 Runs

Secondary Lean: Under 9.5
