The Wake Forest Line Movement Gets My Attention

Wake Forest opened around -22.5 and has moved to approximately -24.5.

That means the market has made the Demon Deacons more expensive even though many public bettors are attracted to Akron and more than three touchdowns.

This is exactly the type of betting situation I want to investigate.

We do not simply fade the public because the public is on Akron. We want the line movement to give us additional information.

Here, the line is moving toward Wake Forest.

Wake Forest Comes Off a Nine-Win Season

Wake Forest finished 9-4 last season and closed the year with a strong bowl performance.

That gives the Demon Deacons continuity and confidence entering the second season of the current coaching regime.

The Zips now face a Wake Forest offense with a veteran quarterback and a considerable overall talent advantage.

Robby Ashford Is the Biggest Matchup Edge

Wake Forest quarterback Robby Ashford gives the Demon Deacons a major advantage.

Ashford produced more than 2,000 passing yards and added more than 500 rushing yards last season.

His dual-threat ability forces defenses to account for an additional runner on every snap.

That can be especially difficult for an underdog trying to keep the game low scoring.

If Akron brings additional defenders toward the line to control the running game, Ashford can attack favorable matchups through the air.

If the Zips play more conservatively, Wake Forest can use Ashford’s legs and its rushing attack to create manageable third downs.

Akron’s Best Path to Covering

Akron needs to slow the game down.

The Zips cannot afford to get into a back-and-forth scoring contest with Wake Forest.

The ideal game script is to run the football, convert third downs, protect the football and reduce Wake’s total number of possessions.

Every empty possession increases the chance that Wake Forest eventually separates.

A large majority of early spread tickets have been on Akron.
