But Saturday’s game has a very different quarterback situation.
Vernon Adams Jr. Is Out
This is the biggest news surrounding Saturday’s game.
Vernon Adams Jr. has been one of the most productive quarterbacks in the CFL this season, throwing for 2,548 yards, 22 touchdowns and only two interceptions through 10 games.
He suffered a head injury in Calgary’s Week 11 game against BC and was limited in practice during the week.
The official Friday depth chart confirmed that Adams has been placed on the reserve roster.
Josh Love gets the start.
Love appeared in relief earlier this season, completing 6-of-10 passes for 58 yards and an interception.
That’s obviously a significant downgrade in experience and production.
Josh Love Gets a Huge Opportunity
This doesn’t mean Love can’t win the game.
Calgary is at home, has already beaten Hamilton by 24 points this season and is coming off a bye week.
The Stampeders also have an experienced coaching staff led by Dave Dickenson.
But the market has already priced Calgary as a six-point favorite, and that’s where the quarterback change becomes extremely important.
The question isn’t whether Calgary can beat Hamilton.
The question is whether Calgary can beat Hamilton by more than a touchdown-sized margin without Adams Jr.
That’s a much different proposition.
Hamilton Turns Back to Tre Ford
Hamilton has also experienced quarterback uncertainty this season.
Tre Ford started last week’s game against Toronto and produced his best passing performance of the season.
Ford threw for a career-high 356 yards, including four completions of at least 30 yards, while avoiding an interception.
He also rushed for 33 yards.
The problem?
Hamilton still lost 39-20 to the Argonauts.
That means Ford’s performance was encouraging, but the Ticats need more consistency from their entire offense.
Tre Ford vs Calgary’s Pass Defense
This is one of the most interesting matchups of the afternoon.
Calgary has struggled defending the pass.
The Stampeders have allowed approximately 329 passing yards per game, giving Ford an opportunity to attack downfield.
Ford also has plenty of receiving help.
Keric Wheatfall has become one of his most dangerous targets and has caught 12 passes for 232 yards and a touchdown over his last two games.
Wheatfall now has 616 receiving yards on the season.
Kiondré Smith and Kenny Lawler provide additional weapons.
That creates a matchup I believe Hamilton can exploit.
Hamilton’s Rushing Attack
The Ticats should also look to establish Larry Rountree III.
Rountree rushed for 63 yards on 12 carries against Calgary earlier this season.
Tre Ford’s ability to run adds another dimension to Hamilton’s offense.
Calgary will have to account for Ford on designed runs while also defending the deep passing game.
If Hamilton can avoid the turnovers that destroyed them in the first meeting, this should be much more competitive.
Calgary’s Running Game
Dedrick Mills is another major storyline.
Mills was injured in Calgary’s Week 11 game but practiced fully during the week and remains listed as the starting running back.
That’s important because Calgary will likely want to take some pressure off Josh Love.
If Mills is able to establish the run, Calgary can keep Hamilton’s defense from simply attacking Love through the air.
Hamilton vs Calgary Injury Report
Hamilton has several players dealing with injuries, including quarterback Harrison Frost, offensive lineman Jonathan Denis and several receivers and defensive players.
Calgary’s biggest injury is obviously Adams Jr.
Dedrick Mills is expected to play, while Reggie Begelton practiced fully during the week.
Kicker Rene Paredes is also expected to make his season debut after missing the first 10 games with an injury.

There are some interesting numbers surrounding this matchup.
Calgary is 4-6 overall and approximately 4-5-1 against the spread.
Hamilton is 4-7 overall and approximately 5-6 against the spread.

That’s a fascinating clash of statistical profiles.
The total of 60 is high, but CFL games can move quickly because of the three-down system, field position and explosive passing attacks.
Home-Field Advantage
Calgary has historically been very difficult for Hamilton at McMahon Stadium.
Since 2017, the Stampeders are 5-1 against Hamilton at home.
That’s a legitimate concern for anyone taking the Ticats.
However, I believe the current number is asking Calgary to do too much with a backup quarterback.
Hamilton vs Calgary Prediction
I expect Calgary to win this game.
I do not, however, think the Stampeders should be laying a full six points with Josh Love making his first start in place of Adams Jr.
Hamilton’s Tre Ford is coming off a 356-yard passing performance and now faces a Calgary pass defense that has been allowing 329 yards per game.
That is a matchup I want to exploit.
Calgary can absolutely win.
But I believe Hamilton has a legitimate chance to keep this within one score.

The total is high, but the combination of Ford’s aggressive passing ability, Calgary’s vulnerable pass defense and the potential for explosive CFL plays makes the Over interesting.
