Sports Watch Monitor Line Moves for CFB and Today’s Top Trends

By Doug Upstone

Let’s ring in a new college football season looking at several line moves, all fresh and many new. We also have what is trending in baseball today. Happy New Year!  Like we say every day, understanding line moves can build your bankroll. (101-74 L43D)

CFB –(133) TEXAS A&M at (134) SOUTH CAROLINA 6:00 E  SECN  *NEW*

ESPN’s ploy to shove the SEC Network down our throats kicks off by having it as the first game of the college football season (sorry Georgia State, you don’t count from last night) as it gets things rolling. Despite two new quarterbacks and a total of 15 returning defensive starters in the contest (Aggies with 9), the total has zoomed from 56 to 61. Both offenses are expected to flourish and talking to a couple of sharps, big plays figure to be a large part of this battle. SWM Take – Lean Over

CFB –(135) WAKE FOREST at (136) UL-MONROE  7:00 E  ESPNU

Wake Forest has been in steady decline since 2006 which brought about a coaching change with Dave Clawson taking over. The first year coach inherits a 4-8 squad from a year ago with only 10 returning starters. With UL- Monroe bringing back 15 starters, the Warhawks have dropped from +4 to +2.5. UL- Monroe will no doubt be fired up to face an ACC squad, but they have to find a quarterback themselves. Watch the line since the home team is 9-2 ATS as underdogs of three or less.Updated – The money has continued to flow towards the home team and Monroe is now a two-point favorite, with just over 75% support. SWM Take – Lean UL-Monroe

CFB – (137) TULANE at (138) TULSA 8:00 ET  CBSSN

After posting a 29-11 record over three seasons, Tulsa plummeted to 3-9 last year and third coach Bill Blankenship is seeking a quick turnaround. Thanks to the positive leadership of coach Curtis Johnson, Tulane had it first winning season in 11 years and went bowling. At least in the contest, those trends are not expected to continue with Tulsa rising two points to -5. Both these squads have moved to the AAC and despite last year’s 14-7 setback, Tulsa is 8-1 SU and ATS since 2005. Updated – Tulsa jumped all the way to -7 on Tuesday before settling at -6.5. The Golden Hurricane is a 4-1 choice in this one. SWM Take – Tulsa covers

CFB –(139) OLE MISS vs. (140) BOISE STATE 8:00 E  ESPN  *NEW*

The total on this non-conference confrontation has been drifting downward, starting at 56.5 and down four points as of this morning. The thought here is Boise State might be unpolished offensively with a new head coach and while the Broncos defense is not as athletic the past few years, they do not allow many points generally, which could keep the score down. Despite the total falling this much, just over 50 percent of bettors are on the UNDER and I’ll lean more towards the original release and call for the OVER thinking both hit big plays setting up scores. SWM Take – Lean Over

CFB – (141) TEMPLE at (142) VANDERBILT 9:15 ET SECN

Temple averaged almost 400 yards a game last year, but just 24.9 PPG, for first-year coach Matt Rhule. If the offensive line can be retooled quickly, this offense could improve to close to 30 PPG. With Vanderbilt having to switch coaches with the departure of James Franklin, the Commodores have dropped from -17 to -14. If Vandy can force turnovers, they cover the spread and they are 9-3 ATS as 10 or more point favorites since 2010. Updated – Vandy has slipped yet again to -13.5 and Temple has 52% support here. Tough call with Vanderbilt having better athletes, let’s assume turnovers count most to find a spread winner. SWM Take – Slight lean with Temple to cover

CFB –(143) RUTGERS vs. (144) WASHINGTON STATE  10:00 E  FS1  *NEW*

This clash is in Seattle and Washington State has lost six straight at the home of the Seahawks and has not defeated a FBS team in an opener since 2005. Football bettors are not certain about the Cougars either and lowered from them -9.5 to -8. Rutgers is a 29-15 ATS in non-conference road games, but with the total at 63, the Scarlet Knights are 1-9 ATS when the total is between 56.5 and 63.  SWM Take – Lean with Washington State to cover
