The Memphis Grizzlies and Oklahoma City Thunder have been considered two of the up-and-coming teams in the Western Conference, and to this point neither has really disappointed. Two teams with young rosters but exciting and dynamic duos will do battle once again when the Grizzlies visit the West-leading Thunder Friday night. This will be the third meeting between these teams this season, with the Thunder taking both previous contests in Memphis (98-95 Dec. 28 and 100-95 Jan. 10). Here’s a look at my NBA picks on the game.

Memphis Grizzlies (12-10) @ Oklahoma City Thunder (17-4), 8 p.m. ET

The Grizzlies didn’t look like an up-and-coming team early on, stumbling to a 3-6 start. Memphis, though, burst out on a seven-game win streak, but has come back to earth of late.. The team has been hurt by injuries to Zach Randolph, who has played in just four games this year after tearing an MCL in his knee on New Year’s Day at Chicago. He’s healing, but will be out for a few more games, which continues to put pressure on Rudy Gay (17.9 ppg, 6.5 rpg, 1.6 spg) and Marc Gasol (14.9 ppg, 10.6 rpg, 2.3 bpg) to carry the load, while Mike Conley (12.9 ppg, 7.2 apg, 2.5 spg) runs the point. The team ranks among the top-10 in points allowed (92.3 ppg), but is among the lowest-scoring teams in the league (93.6 ppg), which poses a challenge against an up-tempo Thunder squad.

Oklahoma City has been running people out of the gym to start this year, and made a statement Wednesday night with a 95-86 road win over the defending champion Dallas Mavericks. The Thunder has not won fewer than four straight games and has only lost consecutive games once – and the team is 12-2 since that “skid.” Thanks to Kevin Durant (26.6 ppg, 8.1 rpg) and Russell Westbrook (21.9 ppg, 5.7 apg, 2.1 spg), Oklahoma City puts the pressure on opposing defense, ranking third in the league in scoring (100.1 ppg) but is also a good rebounding team, ranking eighth with 43.3 boards per contest. In the first two meetings with Memphis, OKC won the tempo battle, getting the games into the upper 90s. At home, the Thunder is hard to keep under wraps offensively, so Memphis will be challenged to keep up.

A look at the latest NBA odds shows Oklahoma City favored by 9 points and a total set for 192.5 points. The Thunder is a strong 8-1 at home this year, scoring 99 or more in seven of the nine games. Memphis would be much more of a threat to the Thunder with Randolph In the lineup as an extra presence alongside Gasol inside. Without him, though, and this time playing the Thunder on the road instead on its home court, Memphis will have an uphill battle. If Memphis can control the tempo and keep this game closer to 90 points, it will have a chance (OKC was held to 93 in its only home loss). But the Thunder is awfully good at dictating tempo at home, so provided it gets the game into the mid to upper-90s, it should be a third straight win for the Thunder against the Grizz this year.

Final Score Prediction: Thunder 102, Grizzlies 88

Friday night in the Rose City, two longtime Western Conference rivals will battle. One is looking to continue its upward trajectory into the elite of the Western Conference, while the other is trying to quell the tide of a bear market on its prospects. Burgeoning star LaMarcus Aldridge and the Portland Trail Blazers will line up against Steve Nash and the Phoenix Suns. This is the second meeting of the season between these teams, with the Suns posting a 102-77 home win on January 6th. Here’s a look at my NBA picks on the game.

Phoenix Suns @ Portland Trail Blazers, 10 p.m. ET

The Suns started 4-4, but have dropped seven of nine since, including a 99-96 home loss to Toronto – the team’s third straight defeat at home. The Suns were 2-3 on their most recent five-game roadie, winning at New York and Boston, but they are still struggling offensively, ranking just 19 th in scoring (92.7 ppg). However, Steve Nash is having a near MVP-like year (14.5 ppg, 10.4 apg, 53 percent FGs) and Marcin Gortat is riding a streak of nine straight double-doubles (15.4 ppg, 9.9 rpg, 59 percent FGs). If Phoenix can find a consistent third option, its fortunes just might turn.

The Blazers started 5-1, but their previous loss to Phoenix started a 6-7 stretch since, including 4-6 in their last 10 games. A modest two-game win streak was snapped Wednesday with a 101-93 loss at Golden State as third game of a back-to-back-to-back stretch. Portland is a strong 8-1 at home this year, losing only to Orlando (107-104). The Blazers are one of the top-10 rebounding (43.2 rpg) and scoring (86.7 ppg) teams in the league, thanks to the play of LaMarcus Aldridge (22.5 ppg, 8.9 rpg) and a balanced attack – six Blazers average double-figures scoring. This is a team that will run, but will also battle physically with its overall athleticism. They have shown bouts of inconsistency, however, seeming to play up or down to their competition.

The NBA odds for tonight list the Blazers as 9.5-point favorites, while the total is set at 190.5 points. Portland has beaten some top teams at home already this year – Philadelphia, the Lakers, the Clippers and the Nuggets – while Phoenix does not have a quality road win to its credit yet this year (all three road wins have been against teams with losing records). With that in mind, while Nash and Gortat have been tremendous for Phoenix, it will have to find a third scorer and better tempo in order to beat a deep team like Portland on its own floor, who should be out for revenge.

Final Score Prediction: Blazers 104, Suns 92

The Los Angeles Clippers have siphoned some celebrity attention off their crosstown rivals for the first time in years, partnering Chris Paul with Blake Griffin. The Minnesota Timberwolves are trying to rise from the depths with a young point guard in Ricky Rubio playing alongside Kevin Love.

Are these teams mirror images? The jury is still out, but certainly two of the best young point guard-power forward combos in the league will face off for the first time Friday night when the T-wolves visit the Clippers in the Staples Center. The latest NBA odds show the Clippers favored by 5 points, while the total has been set for 190.5 points.

Minnesota Timberwolves @ Los Angeles Clippers, 10:30 p.m. ET

The Wolves started 0-3 this season, but have won two straight and three of the last four games after a 93-85 win over Detroit Wednesday night at home, paced by Love’s 20 points and 17 rebounds along with Rubio’s eight assists. Under the up-tempo offensive tutelage of head coach Rick Adelman, Love and Rubio have combined for 35.9 points, 19.1 rebounds and 10.1 assists per contest for a team that ranks a respectable 11th in scoring offense. This is also one of the youngest teams in the league, with just two players listing 30 or older and nine 25 or younger.

The Clippers have also been in favor of an up-tempo attack with Paul and Griffin leading the way. The Clips won their seventh straight home game Wednesday night with a last-second 91-89 win over Dallas – their seventh win in nine games after a 1-2 start. Griffin had 14 points, 17 rebounds and seven assists to lead the way while Paul sat out with a hamstring injury. Chauncey Billups had 21 points and the game-winning 3-pointer. When together, Griffin and Paul have combined for 39.3 points, 14.8 rebounds and 11.4 assists per contest to compare favorably with Love and Rubio, leading an offense that ranks 10th in scoring.

The offensive pace should be high and entertaining for the national-TV crowd to see four of the top young players in the league go toe-to-toe. While Love and Rubio has generated a lot of buzz around Minnesota and the Wolves are clearly more competitive, the Clips have been very tough at home and will be looking forward to enhancing their legitimacy in front of a national audience. L.A. has had generally a tougher schedule early on, which has tested this team and it should help them get over the hump in this matchup – but this game should be one of the higher-scoring contests of the week.

Final Score Prediction: Clippers 110, Timberwolves 95

Michigan State and Georgia have met just two times all-time, and always on a neutral field.

The Outback Bowl hosts a pair of conference runner-ups as Michigan State, of the Big Ten, faces Georgia of the SEC.

The Bulldogs won both previous meetings, 24-12 in 2008 and 34-27 back in 1989.

Our latest Outback Bowl odds list Georgia as a 3.5-point favorite, while the total sits at 50 points.

Michigan State

The Spartans won the inaugural Big Ten Legends Division (7-1) and played an exciting Big Ten title game before falling to Wisconsin, 42-39, halting a four-game win streak. The Spartans were 3-2 away from home this year, wining the last two such games (at Northwestern and at Iowa).

Defensively, the Spartans are one of the better teams in the county, ranking ninth nationally in points allowed (17 points per game) and surrendering 273 yards per game (169 passing, 104 rushing) while recording 41 sacks and forcing 22 turnovers four of which have converted into touchdowns (Jeremy Langford, fumble; Isaiah Lewis and Johnny Adams, three interceptions).

Max Bullough leads this unit with 86 tackles and two forced fumbles, while Denicos Allen has 10 sacks with 78 tackles. Lewis and Trenton Robinson each have four interceptions to go with 145 total tackles, while Langford has two fumble recoveries.

The Spartans rank 39th nationally in scoring offense (31 ppg) while recording 390 yards per game (247 passing, 143 rushing). Kirk Cousins has completed 65 percent of his passes for 3,016 yards and 24 touchdowns with seven interceptions. The offensive line has allowed 15 sacks.

B.J. Cunningham is the leading receiver with 72 receptions for 1,240 yards and 12 TDs, while Keshawn Martin has 62 catches for 742 yards and four scores. Meanwhile, Le’Veon Bell and Edwin Baker anchor the running game with 1,555 combined yards and 16 TDs on 4.8 yards per carry.

Georgia

The Bulldogs won the SEC East title (7-1) and were rolling with a 10-game winning streak before falling 42-10 to top-ranked LSU in the SEC Championship Game. In the 10 wins, Georgia’s defense allowed 20 points or less nine times this season, but allowed 35 or more points in every loss (Boise State, South Carolina, LSU). The Bulldogs were 5-1 away from home, with the lone loss against LSU.

Georgia finished the regular season ranked 17th nationally in scoring defense (20 ppg) and surrendered 268 yards per game (165 passing, 103 rushing) while recording 34 sacks and forcing 29 turnovers with one returned for a TD (Bacarri Rambo, interception).

Jarvis Jones leads the defense with 69 tackles, 13.5 sacks and two forced fumbles, while Shawn Williams and Michael Gilliard each have 65 stops while combining for four picks, three fumble recoveries, two forced fumbles, two sacks and a blocked kick. Rambo has seven interceptions with 52 tackles.

Georgia’s offense enters ranked 34th in the country in scoring (32 ppg) while compiling 414 yards per game (241 passing, 173 rushing). Aaron Murray is completing 59 percent of his passes this season for 2,861 yards and 33 TDs with 12 interceptions. The offensive line has allowed 29 sacks.

Orson Charles is the team’s leading receiver with 44 receptions for 572 yards and five TDs, and Tavarres King has 41 grabs for 500 yards and seven scores. Isaiah Crowell anchors the running game with 847 yards and five TDs on 4.7 yards per carry.

2012 BCS National Championship Preview

The BCS Championship game is no stranger to controversy, and this
year is no different. LSU certainly deserves to be here. They went
undefeated with one of the hardest schedules in the nation, plus won the
SEC Championship game. The controversy comes on the other sideline,
where Alabama, a team that did not win a conference championship and a
team that already lost to their title game opponent, will be residing.

No matter what you may think of the system, there is some or little
argument that LSU and Alabama have proved themselves to be two of the
best, if not the best, teams in the nation at the end of a wild 2011
season. And these two longtime rivals get a rare rematch for a national
title. While the first meeting was in Tuscaloosa, this one will be in
New Orleans the Tigers’ adopted home.

This should make for a very interesting end to an entertaining bowl season, and a college-football campaign overall.

LSU has won the last seven meetings between these two storied
programs, including the 9-6 win in Tuscaloosa and a 24-21 win in Baton
Rouge a year ago.

The latest BCS Championship odds show Alabama favored by 1 points, while the over/under is posted at 41 points.

Alabama

The Crimson Tide had an incredible season. They even bounced back
well after their loss to LSU, winning their last three regular season
games by a combined score of 111-42. This squad is headlined by a
defense that allowed less than 10 points in seven of their twelve games.
Alabama enters the title game with a perfect 5-0 road record.

The Tide is ranked tops in the nation in scoring defense (9 points
per game) and allows 191 yards per game (116 passing, 75 rushing) while
recording 26 sacks and forced 18 turnovers four of which were returned
for touchdowns (DeMarcus Milliner, DeQuan Menzie and Courtney Upshaw,
interceptions).

Dont’a Hightower leads this unit with 81 tackles, while Upshaw leads
the squad with 8.5 sacks and two forced fumbles. Milliner has three
interceptions and Dre Kirkpatrick has two forced fumbles.

Offensively, Alabama ranks 16th nationally in scoring (36 ppg) while compiling 433 yards per game (220 rushing, 213 passing).

Trent Richardson anchors the running game with 1,583 yards and 20 TDs
on 6.0 yards per carry, while Eddy Lacy adds 631 yards and seven TDs on
7.5 ypc. A.J. McCarron has completed 67 percent of his passes for 2,400
yards and 16 touchdowns with five interceptions, while the offensive
line allowed 15 sacks. Marquis Maze is the top pass-catcher with 56
receptions (29 more than anyone else) for 627 yards and a TD.

LSU

The Tigers finished the regular season as the only unbeaten team in
college football, and their difficult schedule made the feat all the
more impressive. They defeated Alabama, of course, and won their last
four games by a combined 177-39.

LSU is second nationally in scoring defense (10 ppg), ranking only
behind Alabama, and allows 252 yards per game (167 passing, 85 rushing)
while compiling 37 sacks and forcing 30 turnovers six of which were
returned for TDs (Morris Claiborne and Ron Brooks, three interceptions;
Tyrann Mathieu and Kevin Minter, three fumbles).

Mathieu paces the defense with 70 tackles, six forced fumbles and
five recoveries, while Sam Montgomery has recorded nine sacks and
Barkevious Mingo added eight. Claiborne is one of the top pickoff
artists in the nation with six interceptions.

The Tigers rank 12th in the country offensively (38 ppg) while
recording 375 yards of offense per game (215 rushing, 160 passing).

Michael Ford and Spencer Ware lead the rushing attack with a combined
1,455 yards and 15 TDs on 4.7 yards per carry. Jordan Jefferson has
completed 60 percent of his passes for 684 yards and six TDs with just
one interception, while the offensive line has allowed 14 sacks. Reuben
Randle is the top receiving target with 50 catches for 904 yards and
eight TDs.

2012 Allstate Sugar Bowl Preview

The Sugar Bowl is likely to have a sweet matchup. Two of the more
decorated programs in history, and a pair of the toughest defensive
units in the country in 2011, will face off in New Orleans when Michigan
of the Big Ten takes on ACC runner-up Virginia Tech.

This bowl will be the first-ever meeting between the teams.

Our Sugar Bowl odds show Michigan as a 2.5-point spread favorite, while the total has been set at 50.5 points.

Michigan

The Wolverines ended their regular season with three consecutive
wins, the most recent a 40-34 rivalry win against Ohio State to win 10
games under first-year coach Brady Hoke, ending up second in the Big Ten
Legends Division (6-2). The Wolverines were 2-2 as a visitor, getting
beat by Michigan State and Iowa.

The Wolverines rate seventh nationally in scoring defense (17 points per contest) and surrender 318 yards per contest (189 through the air, 129 via the run) while recording 28 sacks and forcing 27 turnovers three of which were taken back for touchdowns (Brandon Herron and Courtney Avery, fumbles; Herron, pick).

Kenny Demens leads the defense with 86 stops (22 more than anyone
else), while Ryan Van Bergen has five sacks and three fumble recoveries.
Thomas Gordon has four fumble recoveries, and Avery and J.T. Floyd each
have two picks.

Virginia Tech

The Hokies reached the conference title game once again (7-1, won
Coastal Division), but had their seven-game victory streak broken with a
38-10 defeat to Clemson. Virginia Tech is 6-1 as a visitor, winning the
first six such games. Both of Tech’s defeats this season came versus
Clemson.

The Hokies rate eighth nationally in points against (17 ppg) and
surrenders 314 yards per game (206 through the air, 108 rushing) while
recording 38 sacks and enticing 22 turnovers.

Antone Exum leads the defense with 85 stops and two forced fumbles,
while James Gayle has a team-high seven sacks. Jayron Hosley has three
picks and two forced fumbles.

The Hokies rate 55th nationally in points (28 ppg) while totaling 416 yards per game (227 passing, 189 rushing).

David Wilson anchors the ground game with 1,627 yards and nine TDs on
6.1 yards per carry, while Logan Thomas completes 59 % of his throws
for 2,799 yards and 19 touchdowns with nine interceptions. The offensive
line has allowed 15 sacks. Jarrett Boykin anchors the receivers with 57
receptions for 731 yards and five TDs, while Danny Coals has 52
receptions for 787 yards and three scores.

2012 Fiesta Bowl Matchup

With the selection of No. 3 Stanford and No. 4 Oklahoma State two of
the most potent offenses in college football to play in this year’s
edition of the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl, the expectation is that this will
be one of the best bowl games of the season.

This game will mark the first-ever meetings between these teams.

A look at the most recent Fiesta Bowl odds shows the Cowboys listed
as 3.5-point favorites, while the over/under sits at 74 points.

Stanford

Stanford tied for the best record in the Pac-12 at 8-1, but a loss to
co-champion Oregon left the Cardinal on the outside looking in for the
conference’s first-ever title game. They did end their season on a high
note, however, beating Notre Dame 28-14. The Cardinal also carry a 5-0
road record into the Fiesta Bowl.

The Cardinal are the 5th-best scoring offense in the country (44 ppg)
while recording 481 yards per game (273 passing, 208 rushing). Andrew
Luck completes 70 percent of his passes for 3,170 yards and 35
touchdowns with nine interceptions.

Griff Whalen leads the receiving corps with 49 catches (14 more than
anyone else) for 664 yards and four TDs, while Stepfan Taylor anchors
the running game with 1,153 yards and eight TDs on 5.6 yards per carry.

Defensively, Stanford ranks 23rd nationally in points allowed (20
ppg), giving up 331 yards per game (241 passing, 90 rushing) while
compiling 38 sacks and forced 21 turnovers two of which were returned
for TDs (Michael Thomas, interception; Max Bergen, fumble).

Jarek Lancaster leads the unit with 63 tackles, while Michael Thomas
has 61 tackles and a team-best three interceptions. Chase Thomas pitches
in with 8.5 sacks and five forced fumbles.

Oklahoma Stat e

Oklahoma State started 10-0 this season, and looked well on their way
to a possible BCS Championship game appearance before suffering a
shocking double-overtime loss at Iowa State. The Cowboys bounced back
well, however, blowing out instate rival Oklahoma, 44-10. Oklahoma State

This year’s Rose Bowl will feature two very similar programs in
recent history. One played in this game a season ago (Wisconsin) while
the other played for a national title. Oregon made this bowl two seasons
ago but has dominated its conference the past three years.

The Rose Bowl Game presented by Vizio will feature Big Ten champion
Wisconsin taking on Pac-12 champ Oregon in Pasadena. This will be the
fifth all-time game between the schools, with the Badgers owning a 3-1
series lead. However, the Ducks won the last meeting in Eugene, 31-28,
back in 2001.

Our latest Rose Bowl odds show Oregon -6 and the over/under at 72 points.

Wisconsin

Wisconsin earned their second straight Rose Bowl appearance by
winning the inaugural Big Ten Championship Game with a 42-39 verdict
over Michigan State. The Badgers come into this game riding a five-game
win streak, which followed two straight defeats, which came after a 6-0
start. The Badgers were 4-2 away from home this year, winning the past
three such games.

Wisconsin is one of the few schools to be rated in the top-10 in the country in both scoring offense and defense.

The Badgers rank fourth nationally in points scored (45 points per
game) while totaling 467 yards per game (237 via the rush, 230 via the
pass). Montee Ball leads the offense by anchoring the running game with
1,759 yards and 32 touchdowns on 6.4 yards per tote, while James White
adds 683 yards and six scores on 5.1 yards per tote.

Russell Wilson has completed 72 % of his throws for 2,879 yards and
31 touchdowns with three picks. The offensive line has allowed 23 sacks.
The main pass-catching targets are Nick Toon and Jared Abbrederis, who
have combined for 106 grabs for 1,636 yards and 16 scores.

The Badger defense rates a strong sixth nationally in points allowed
(17 ppg) and allows 293 yards per game (155 via the pass, 138 rushing)
while recording 23 sacks and enticing 24 turnovers one taken back for a
touchdown (Derek Landisch, fumble).

Mike Taylor anchors the unit with 137 tackles, while Chris Borland
has a team-high four forced fumbles with 131 total tackles. Louis Nzegwu
has 4.5 sacks, while Shelton Johnson and Antonio Fenelus each have four
interceptions.

Oregon

The Ducks suffered a season-opening defeat to LSU, then won nine
straight before a home loss to USC, then finished with 98 points scored
in victories over Oregon State and UCLA to take a third straight
conference championship. The Ducks were 4-1 away from home this season,
winning the last four such contests.

The Ducks rate third nationally in points (46 ppg) while compiling
515 yards per game (296 on the ground, 219 through the air). LaMichael
James leads this ground game with 1,646 yards and 17 scores on 7.4 yards
per carry, while Kenjon Barner has 909 yards and 11 scores on 6.3 yards
per attempt.

Darron Thomas connects on 61 percent of his passes for 2,493 yards
and 30 scores with six picks. The offensive line has allowed 12 sacks.
De’Anthony Thomas is the main receiving target with 42 receptions for
571 yards and nine touchdowns, while Lavasier Tuinei has 40 receptions
for 441 yards and eight touchdowns.

On defense, the Ducks rank 48th in the nation in points against (24
ppg) and give up 381 yards per game (244 through the air, 137 via the
rush) while compiling 43 sacks and generating 27 turnovers three of
which were returned for TDs (Boseko Lokombo and Michael Clay, three
picks).

John Boyett anchors the defensive unit with 91 tackles and two
blocked kicks, while Clay has 89 tackles and a team-best two forced
fumbles. Dion Jordan has 7.5 sacks, Eddie Pleasant has three
interceptions and Brandon Hanna has three fumble recoveries.
